A primary contributing factor to messy JRPG stories is that the number of playable characters grow beyond what the plot needs. It's a tricky balancing act of offering mechanical variety without juggling more characters than the story can handle.

I started with git & only began using p4 in the past year and I already vastly prefer it. Especially for projects w tons of undiffable binary files and big teams, explicit checkouts are so useful
