E.g., see the varying estimates for U.S. adults. read.dukeupress.edu/demography/a...

No single survey is a definitive benchmark for sexual identity. Among adults these estimates vary considerably from survey to survey. This is one wave with a response rate of about 31%. There is a change that deserves study, but “free fall” does not describe it.

The biggest shift in the series came in 2021, when CDC changed the answer choices and moved the survey from spring to fall. Among 9th graders, 85% identified as heterosexual in 2019, 73% in 2021 and 2023, and 80% in 2025. About half of the 2021 drop went to options that did not exist before.

Each YRBS wave is a new sample of students, not the same students over time. Comparing across waves, the prevalence of bisexual identification was 11.0% among 9th graders in 2023 and 10.1% among 11th graders in 2025. The lower prevalence appears only among 2025’s 9th graders.

Among 9th graders, bisexual identification fell from 11.0% to 6.9% between 2023 and 2025. That is where it was in 2019 (7.0%). No other grade had a significant change.
