One last thing about that Mail headline: my grandparents didn’t fight for Britain, they *survived* in Britain. Our national psychology around the Second World War is so very unhinged. Many of those who did fight in that war didn’t speak much about it afterwards for very good reasons.

My granddad was unquestionably racist. And he came up against the absolute idiocy of his own beliefs in those final years.

My grandmother is 94. She’s not a racist. My grandfather was 94, nearly 95 when he died. And, in the home where he lived for the last three years of his life, he was cared for by people from all over the world. In his dying hours, the presence of a nurse from Jamaica who he liked a lot soothed him.
