When I was a child, 53 seemed like such an ancient, faraway age, where people would probably totter about aimless and confused, forgetting everything, parts of their decrepit body falling off, always tired and everything hurting. Now I actually am 53, I realise I was absolutely spot on.

Husband walked past a lady on a mobility scooter lopping some branches off a hedge. She was struggling to reach the high ones. He offered to help her. She gratefully agreed. When he’d finished she said, ‘thank you, I keep catching myself on these when I go by and they never seem to cut them back.’
