Remember how much time we spent in his first term hearing about how he would never call a country a "shithole" and how The Post was fake news?
Show PostDisclaimer: I love Beto. One of my favorite Texas pols of all-time. With that said, this analysis is a good example of how the Trump era has broken brains. Beto is a better *rally* candidate than Talarico. He is better at firing up and energizing the base. But a winning coalition requires more.
Show PostTalarico is tamer and more vanilla than Beto, yes — and I think that's a strength (not a weakness) with the electorate here. Because all Trump cares about is big, bombastic rallies and playing to his base, a lot of analysts seem to have concluded that's all a political candidate needs to do. Wrong.
Show Postgrok what would a smart guy say
