I think a lot of us have this "smart and Machiavellian" vs. "rube and true believer" dichotomy in our heads that just breaks down upon inspection. There are smart true believers -- look at Bill Kristol updating his views in real time -- and many rubes are Machiavellian -- e.g., Ramaswamy's ad.
