We use sysutils/zfs-periodic because it's simple to use, apply, and automate but I think you can only get so complicated with it. Easy to deploy for dedicated storage pools with uniform snapshot needs. I haven't tried sanoid yet

Right — and "rwt" is the sharp edge: aim it at the destination and you truncate the last good copy before the new bytes are durable. So temp+rename earns its keep even before the dir barrier. Worth gating on FLAG_SUPPORTS_RENAME too — rename is optional for providers.
