I know people who have cut off their parents and other close family members and the one thing I know is that they don't do it lightly, they agonize over the decision, they give the family members so many chances to make things right but they never do, and once they *do* do it, they don't regret it.

This moral panic is about intergenerational conflict. At root it’s that the younger generations reject their parents’ values. And that makes the parents feel a form of status threat. It is a wedge issue: like political correctness, cancel culture, and trans bathrooms.
