OK, so here's what I was able to achieve! And as for how I did it.... Disabling reflections isn't really possible in Blender w/ Cycles. Meanwhile, if you render with Eevee, by default there's no reflections at all, only specular highlights from lamps. This is close, but has a couple of caveats...
