Iowa did something that had never been done before, it repealed duly enacted civil rights protections for a protected class for the first time in history. There is no precedent for that at all.

And these laws affect everything from participation in sports, how you can address yourself in educational settings, what healthcare you can receive, what your identity documents say, what bathrooms you can use. It's a comprehensive regime to push trans people out of society.

To be clear, there's no direct comparison to what's happening to trans people and what happened to Black folks under Jim Crow but it is helpful to look at their respective legislative frameworks to find some sort of precedent for statutory enactment.
