In addition to being inundated with Nazi content, the overall culture of the space was so broken—including on the left, though I’m not sure folks are ready to have that conversation. The fact is, with Elon in charge, everything bad could only get worse.

Whether these convos come up, I always feel compelled to point out how good leaving X was for my mental health. Having a large following there was always an emotionally rocky experience, but towards the end, it was nightmarish.

I left Twitter because I was permanently banned for writing about fascism. . . . . .Because Twitter is now a fascist platform controlled by the richest fascist in the world. Some of us aren’t allowed there. So, the pro-X discourse seems like desperate (fascist) propaganda.

Getting some distance has allowed me to see how toxic posting on X/Twitter actually was—it’s not the same on Bluesky at all despite being the same format—and how much the act of participating in that culture has affected many people.
