5 years of support from launch for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro ends after October 2026. Pixel 8 and later moved to a much longer 7 years of support from launch. Some Pixels have often had their updates end as soon as the guarantee ends while others have received an extra month or two of partial updates.
Show PostLinux doesn't have to mean glibc, GNU coreutils, systemd, GNOME and so on. GrapheneOS is a Linux distribution too. It's also entirely possible to run desktop Linux software on GrapheneOS via the desktop mode combined with the Terminal VM management app. Those have become much better in Android 17.
Show PostEnd-of-life devices would still be insecure due to lack of updates for firmware, kernel, drivers and HALs. It's not within the scope of what GrapheneOS exists to provide. Only devices meeting our security requirements will be supported. Our requirements include 5-7 more years of security updates.
Show PostBoth Nexus and Pixel devices use the unmodified AOSP code for the corresponding AOSP release. AOSP no longer has the corresponding monthly and QPR1/QPR3 tags anymore but it still matches for the QPR2 and yearly releases. Nexus devices worked the same way, they just have more exclusive features now.
Show PostAOSP itself only runs in a virtual machine. It provides a kernel and userspace but not the drivers, services and HAL implementations to run on real hardware. Google certified Android devices can boot with a generic AOSP kernel image and system image but that's only part of the kernel and userspace.
