We are expected to spend our days and nights with tears in our eyes for 5% success rate. Then get evaluated “not enough grants, not good enough” for jobs, opportunities, promotions. We are beyond f*cked.

In 2002, success rate at the ERC starting grant was 14%. This already felt too low to both panel and applicants, but was constrained by government funding. Well, 5 years later, it is now projected to be 5%. This is not sustainable.

One of the more annoying things about the ERC StG's projected success rate falling to <5% is that those lucky few who get the grant will be treated by their unis as if they are incomparably better scientists than everyone else, when we all know that this is essentially going to be a lottery.
