The time commit is tolerated, but the fuel costs go up. That and higher per capita infrastructure costs to serve those far-sprawling single family residences. US auto policy and regulation is terrible, but land use regs (and funding) may be even worse. Dense areas heavily subsidize the sprawl.

"New paint" just saves motorists' consciences about not giving 5ft clearance to cyclists, because they have separate lanes. Only physical, 3D separation works.
