This may be an issue because infants are sensitive to repetitive auditory patterns (same vs different tokens in a sequence). So MP may not be the best to test rule learning. An odball EEG paradigm might be better? It could test meaningless/meaningful auditory or visual tokens in rule-learning.

Yes, it is a central aspect of the Marcus paradigm (MP) that the items at test are novel. This rules out associative learning. The issue is that the same new test items are presented repeatedly in the MP. During fam there was no such repetition of items. This might be an inherent issue with the MP.
