Robert Musil in The Man Without Qualities describes an emptiness at the centre of being, a void necessary for change, even genius. Though ordinarily immune to place or era, the void, Musil suggests, became in pre-WWI Austria the whole culture. What vacuity swirls round us now? What cataclysms await?

Imagine being Sharron Davies and thinking the riots in France are because of immigration. Obviously the concept of revolt has been alien to the French until they adopted a multicultural society. Why, they'd not even heard of the word "protest" before 1990.
