I think Elizabeth Holmes is full of shit, but like most great liars, believes her shit earnestly when it suits her. There is no way she didn’t understand the plain reading of her claim about the device’s capabilities. But she probably had enough conviction to play innocent years later, on camera.

When Fielder refers to Holmes as being like a "magician", I think this is what he's correctly picking up on: Someone who can earnestly believe make-believe when it suits them, because the earnest believing of make-believe is how you get other people to participate in believing it too.
