So it turns out there’s no realm of “hungry ghosts” in early Buddhism. The Pali is petti, which Bodhi translates as “afflicted spirits”, and I as “ghosts”: both are dead wrong. Petti means “paternal”. This is the old Vedic “domain of the forefathers”.

Reminds me of what my Italian wife’s uncle told me. They lived in Milan. As far as he was concerned, the bottom half of Italy could sink into the Mediterranean. When I asked him, what about Rome, he said, Rome too.
