It's not literal. He's a comedian for one but the joke's about attitudes to the State. In Germany, it's allowed for the State to actually do things. Here, the State doing things is called socialism by our press and so-called think-tanks.

I don't wear one. The State should take responsibility for supporting veterans. The existence of a charity like the Royal British Legion shouldn’t be a moral obligation placed on individuals, but a reflection of government failure.

Same. Both my mother and her husband (I wont refer to him as a relative) have made the decision to be arseholes. 40 years I've put up with him and his straw-man and whataboutism bullshit. And he wonders why I don't phone or visit. it tears me up, but I just can't stand it.
