I've seen it in conversations where abuse to the bot just continues after handoff to a human. Extrapolate that to someone being abusive to an AI moments before they start writing an email to you. Bad habit that leads to real harms, easily stopped, why wouldn't you?

It's not for benefit of Claude it's for the benefit of society. I've worked with chatbots since long before LLMs and it's never been cool to be mean to the computer. Because that's training muscle memory that later gets applied to people. So yes, not cool to carve out interactions where abuse is ok.
