Oh, I just thought of something. Maybe if the threats to society aren’t worldwide but are just localized (say to one country/continent), then it could work like forest fires. Not all the trees in the world burn down, so after the fire there’s an opportunity for regrowth.

I remember being in history class as a teen and thinking “well that would never happen again, we’re smarter now” If enough people ignore the lessons from history and no one is alive anymore to give a first-hand testimony to convince them, then what do we do?
