i've told this story before but one time i saw GS give a talk about how physicalist theories of consciousness are not just wrong, but so absurdly and obviously wrong, it would be like saying that consciousness is identical to pizza. a buddy in q&a goes 'here's one respect in which a brain theory...

More generally, Southern states were ahead of the rest of the country on adopting party primaries in the late 19th / early 20th C. Likewise as a mechanism for maintaining white supremacist one-party rule. The whites-only primary persisted until 1944, and was still perpetuated de facto after that.
