Oh the two protagonists I hated the most going to high school in the 90s were Alicia Silverstone in "Clueless" and Claire Danes in "My So-Called Life." It was a combination of gender envy, class envy and just generally finding their whole deal annoying. "Jawbreaker" and "Buffy" were more me.

Family estrangement isn't new. The present moral panic is a version of Wilhoit's Law: there are family members whom the family code protects but does not bind and those whom the code binds but does not protect. Elders can denigrate you, police your politics, choose your mate, blackmail you. 7/_
