There are many issues that need to be addressed directly, rather than simply citing people's compensatory behaviors as evidence that people want something or that it shouldn't go away.
Show PostAnd there are a lot of social problems we could definitely address with the money being poured into data centers. As my friends who successfully fought to ban "AI therapy" in IL argued, the solution to an insufficient number of providers is training more providers, not substituting AI.
Show PostPeople will do many things they don't think are good for them or the world to keep up with their jobs. People will often accept shitty, unwanted substitutes for things they actually want but can't access (a working search engine, a therapist).
Show PostThat said, I also don't want to reduce AI use to "mere convenience" because that also ignores the capitalist pressures, existing product sabotage, and forms of organized abandonment that help manufacture demand.
