i judge for a few festivals, and i can safely say that the games that always stand out the most are ones with personal creative care taken in every aspect of the game. people say AI should replace this but you can’t automate intentionality or love. if you bank on that then you don’t understand art.

I like how the three tech tree optimist transitions Tim Sweeny credits himself for making (C to C++, 2D to 3D, closed to open source) are all subjective choices that people are still doing and making good games while doing them. It's like art isn't a linear progressing timeline or something.
