I calculated awhile ago an estimate of how much he made from just his wide circulation in papers alone, not even including book sales and its no wonder he could retire at a younger age worry free, an impossibility for any modern working artist.

My children recently asked why there were no C&H toys, movies, stuffies, anything--and I got to explain the concept of IP. He made enough money to turn it down, but almost no others did. I respect his choice more as time goes on.

obviously c&h is undeniable. i just think it is worthwhile drawing attention to the fact he had won the jack-pot when he said no to merchandising or adaptation. i have spent most of my life judging folks for doing the opposite, when honestly i am not sure i would be able to materially say no!
