Chisel marks in the second photo. Each driven into the sandstone by a tool gripped by a callused hand, Iberian or imported slave, all those 2000 years ago for Roman masters. Thanks to geology friend prof Isa Cacho for ID

This rather non-descript bit of rock face on the far side of Montjuïc is all that's left of the Roman quarry of Barcelona. Limestone from here was shipped five km up the coast to build Barcino and its walls and forum. Most was destroyed to build this road for the 1992 Olympics. 1/2

Flysch cliffs, Zumaia, one of the most amazing geological formations I've seen. These vertical layers run for 8 kilometres along Basque coast, each a page, forming a book covering 60 million years of our planet's history. Created when Iberia crashed into Europe and things went all squishy.
