But "our most influential newsrooms" cannot escape the politics of their decision. It isn't neutral, non-partisan. It is giving cover to the obvious. It is a cloak of deniability, of invisibility for an authoritarian state in the making. In a word, it is complicity.

This is key. A story here, a story there. Beneath the fold. Deep inside the paper. Contrast stories about Biden's age for instance. When a paper wants to forefront an issue, it does so. The "haze" is a smoke that is meant to obscure, to veil.
