I was at the meeting last night and what came to the fore for me is that the union (not really a proper union as we can't do collective bargaining but that's a separate discussion) needs more teeth. It needs to be less softly softly with publishers and more "here is our position"

AI is coming but it's not fully here yet. Where we draw our red lines now is important because this is where they will be under attack tomorrow. So, let's draw them carefully.

3) Underline that at its heart AI is a threat to writers, writing and the environment and should be resisted as much as possible 4) Ultimately, this won't be fixed by changing some words. It needs a complete change in intent from the SoA to draw a line in the sand on behalf of its members

The Society of Authors is surveying members about their so-called AI charter: 1) Rip it up and start again 2) Include explicit red lines where AI use is UNETHICAL with examples. i.e. No use in generating ideas or plot. No AI-written text. I don't care if you use it for spellcheck or voice-typing.
