One example I use here is the 'moral status' of insects. If you swat a mosquito that's about to bite you, I don't think you're a murderer; I don't think mosquitoes are sapient. But if you're the kind of person who like to pluck the wings off living insects, I will look *very* askance at you.

Just for everyone's reference, the Hiller Museum is near SFO and well worth visiting before you fly out again. It full of things where dream were made real but sense prevailed and they did not work/become mass produced.
