It's one of the reasons I'm such a big advocate for 26-episode season for Star Trek, Because one of the biggest drivers of good Trek were the limitations that put on the writers - tight shooting schedules, and extremely limited budgets. "We can't afford any new sets this week, or any FX makeup."

Friction is so important to creative work that people *add* friction to allow themselves to do it. Just one example: meter, in poetry. You create a framework that restricts you, that limits you, in order to give your thoughts a scaffold within which to build.
