There's a big chunk of a chapter all about it in DT Willingham's Why don't Students like School! He mainly talks about how it shows that skills aren't necessarily transferable to other contexts unless we know enough about the new context to spot the shared deep. (... IIRC)

In #MathsToday I busted out the 150 question "20 minute multiplication challenge" from the old 10 ticks as a starter. Sometimes, you just need to calm down Y9 after a very wet and windy lunch.
