You've seen fireworks that look like jellyfish, but what about a jellyfish that looks like fireworks? The E/V Nautilus filmed this rare Halitrephes maasi jellyfish glowing like a firework at a depth of 4,019 feet (1,225 meters) off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. (📷: Ocean Exploration Trust)
Show PostMonterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) captured this slightly less spectacular specimen at 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) deep in Monterey Bay during the summer of 2021. The scientific name "Halitrephes maasi" honors German zoologist Otto Maas, with Halitrephes meaning "sea-nourished".
