Their marine concrete never stopped reacting. Work on harbour cores in 2017 found aluminous tobermorite and phillipsite crystallising in the mortar as seawater percolated through it — strength gained from the very thing that wrecks modern concrete. Vitruvius only knew to specify Puteoli ash.
