They were great when environment was too bright while I was studying - lecture theatres etc, but not now.

Arnold Wilkins has done work on visual discomfort and tinted glasses since at least 1985 that I know of. He found that the discomfort from repetitive patterns like square wave gratings is reduced but the tint required varies from person to person.
