@hittingerlab.bsky.socialResistance to antifungal medications is growing. Now, #UofG researchers have developed a faster way to identify the genetic vulnerabilities of Candida fungi, which could lead to brand new treatments. @uofgcbs.bsky.social @uofgresearch.bsky.social uoguel.ph/vze5i
Show PostBacked by $8M in federal funding, Dr. Chris Todd Hittinger will be the new Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair of Canada in Biodiscovery, Biodesign and Bioproduction at #UofG as part of the Canada Global Impact+ Research Talent Initiative. Show Post21/ If you would have told me that by genome sequencing of only 7 wild yeast strains we'd find the first "natural" example of a species transitioning from septin octamers to hexamers, possibly as an adaptation to a warmer habitat, I'd have questioned your sanity. I am still dumbfounded at our luck
Show Post4/ She’d seen prickly pears on her mountain hikes and also this paper from the Rokas @rokaslab.bsky.social and Hittinger @hittingerlab.bsky.social labs using genomic analysis of wild yeasts to find signatures of convergent evolution as yeast adapt to a cactus host journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
Show Post22/ Years ago when I told a very respected researcher about our wild yeast stuff, he said it was beyond hypothesis-driven research & more like true exploration & recommended a book about Alexander von Humboldt. I am so grateful to fellow explorer Alya, now a @hittingerlab.bsky.social postdoc. /end
