the only worse one was Germans increasing the Nazi share from 18.3% in 1930, rising finally over subsequent elections to 43.9% in March 1933 which was the last fair election. so lets qualify that for the most self-harming in the history of the United States (let's hope Trump doesn't outdo Hitler)

I have to give that to Hitler due to the sheer amount of destruction and death. (Don't get me wrong, Trump is plenty deadly and destructive.) Thankfully Trump is lazy and incompetent so he's stuck at number 2. I can't imagine how much worse it would be if he were capable.
