i also can pretty much guarantee you that most of the people you’re seeing don’t view their mission as “dispelling racist claims that you’re an army from a foreign country” or whatever. they’re defending their communities, not pitching their cause to centrist pundits.

Almost nothing the police do surprises me at protests against governments. I've been at them myself back in the late 80s (against the poll tax) & seen the police instigate rioting at the behest of the government, who want to discredit protestors in the eyes of the wider public, via a compliant media
