I cut off my father because he and his wife were selfish narcissists who continually browbeat me for not meeting their expectations for a good and dutiful daughter. They wanted my intelligence, wit, beauty, and charm, as accessories to their perfect family facade.

I stopped talking to my father in 2002. He died horribly in 2005. His death fucked me up, but not as much as the constant drip of poison of having him in my life. It's healthy to want to be known and loved by your parents. It's also healthy to make space when you realize they cannot provide that.

Some parents are shitty enough to deserve being cut off, and some adult kids are shitty enough to cut off parents who probably don't deserve that, and neither of these things constitutes a national crisis.
