Show PostOn the one hand, it's just dumb. Universities are, in fact, real, and they exist in the world. American universities employ about 3x as many people as there are active duty servicemembers, so if soldiers are "real," then so are academics.
Show PostOn the other, more substantive, hand: if what these folks mean by contrasting the academy with "the real world" is that the academy has a different ethos than, say, many for-profit employment settings, then ... YES!
