There’s a great Letterman bit where Gerard Mulligan is showing off his favourite Family Circus strips and a girder falls on him but he survives because the comics shield him. Bill Keane sees it and sends them a book and Family Circus saves Gerard’s life again when the book stops a crossbow bolt.
