I'm not the first to note if they would just say "okay yes these specific Dems are horrible and we am arguing in favor of short term gain" rather than minimize the harm and disparage our concern as "purity testing" there'd at least be a reasonable conversation to be had.

Cool. Actual point I'm trying to make: for several of these characters, "broke artist suffering for the purity of their art" is a costume they've chosen to put on, and take off at any time. They have support structures to fall back on. They won't freeze to death on the streets.
