Capcom higher-ups were more than happy with RE6, but the devs wanted the critical acclaim other games were garnering, especially since many of them were obviously influenced by RE. So, RE7 and not only would it be narrative driven, it would have even more lore connections.
Show PostAt least according to gaming press.
Show PostIt may surprise you to learn that the originally planned RE7 went through a few iterations. Instead of taking cues from CoD, they were all coming from The Last of Us, with even a mandate to focus on narrative, since that seemed like the only rationale to make a single-player game anymore.
Show PostThe Last of Us was getting all the accolades and sales despite being a horror game. (Horror games didn't have the cachet they do now, and we were still a few years away from the "elevated horror" revival in films.) Like TLoU, RE6 had rising star Troy Baker but no one really cared.
Show Post... roots is an act of nostalgia, and it is. Nostalgia when used properly, however, can have merit as an innovative tool! It can inspire a new way forwards, iterating upon the past to bridge the future. Hence- RE7 taking the Spencer Mansion formula, filtering it through a southern gothic prism.
