Was bothered enough by this that I did some of my own sleuthing. Do these graphs tell you that supporting early-career researchers is a “high priority”? Not to me! Trend surely isn’t terrible, but this cannot be celebrated w/o consideration of all the crap that happened last year.

Can you send me the analysis? How many overall were awarded? In my view the most straightforward way to show support would be across Fs, K01 (and their sibling formats), K99, ESI-R01s how many more ppl got money? How much money was issued? Then also subtract terminations.

This is misleading. Comparing ‘26 to a 10-year average is a poor choice. Interesting to claim a “record # of early career awards”issued solely from R01 ESI grants. What about Ks, or I dunno every other award type that early career ppl get… @grantwitness.org @noamross.net @jeremymberg.bsky.social

Completely agree! The 10 year avg includes data over a period where application numbers, awards and budget were substantially lower, not to mention data from 2025 which was an outlier (see figure) due largely to the Vought/Bhattacharya multiyear funding policy. 🧵

It is still as unethical today as it was then.
