Omg you hit this right on the head! I have assumed human empathy and understand my entire life. Things came crashing down over a period of a couple years and I was baffled, shocked, sickened by the level of betrayal or just my flat out naivety about the humans closest to me.

I'm not staying in autism research myself, I'm only doing it bc I'm interested in figuring out which genes are implicated in social behavior so that I can study it in reptiles (I have that snake/bug autism), but yeah, the vibes from the wider research community is pretty rancid.

Is it normal and part of being autistic to have extreme anxiety when people do not respond to you right away? I think it is related to being stuck and not being able to move forward. Things then become unpredictable. Out of control. it can be very distressing for me.

Being autistic is knowing that your pain and distress are often seen as less important than other people’s feelings. We’re expected to tolerate social overwhelm, confusion, sensory overload and more - and hide our pain/distress in case others may be offended by it.
