The point isn't to try and "explain away" antisemitism, but to try and explain why the social norms and conventions against it have collapsed so utterly and quickly. I don't think it's denying the continuity of antisemitic thought to argue that the discursive conditions have changed dramatically.

And that context makes it impossible to maintain any kind of cordon sanitaire; when you've normalized and accepted that kind of rhetoric and that kind of conspiratorial attitude, you can't then draw an arbitrary line because THIS time it's actually really serious.

The point I kept coming back when writing this is that antisemitism is clearly different than a lot of the other bigotries and general toxicity that get thrown around on the internet--in terms of lineage and impact and influence--but I don't think that distinction is clear to the people doing it.
