We examined 311 grooming interactions of male East African chimpanzees. We looked at their gestural redoings (repeating, modifying or switching a request), as in previous studies, but also at negotiation (back-and-forth signalling) and whether progressivity was restored (grooming resumed). 2/4

Show PostWe found that switching gestural requests and negotiation were associated with restored progressivity. Social bonds also mattered for how negotiations ended 👥. These processes seemingly share features with human communicative repair and may have evolutionary roots predating human language. 3/4
