I know someone who says she prefers dating men who "aren't conventionally attractive" because in her experience, very conventionally attractive men tend to be too self-centered. She'd rather be with someone who romantically centers her than himself.

I would as well. But I also think, too, in the context of how straight men are generally perceived (online, most specifically), that would change the researched outcome. Social media, despite its "loudness," is a very narrow (yet potentially potent) sample size. Then the specifics of "dating down?"
