I know people who have cut off their parents and other close family members and the one thing I know is that they don't do it lightly, they agonize over the decision, they give the family members so many chances to make things right but they never do, and once they *do* do it, they don't regret it.

Child abuse is widespread in the US. According to the CDC, the number of kids who experience it is one in seven. The most common type of abuse is neglect, followed by physical and sexual abuse. I don't think this response should come as a surprise.
