This is basic intellectual hygiene: not to assume all arguments are nothing more than pretexts for the most vulgar versions of the possible positions. I don’t think AIs are conscious, but it’s a hard question and we do ourselves no favors pretending it has been answered beyond a doubt.

One of the things that really shines through in these AI debates is how many of the antis refuse to actually use or touch the thing they're trying to criticize, which leads to claims that have this religious tenor and bear no resemblance whatsoever to real-world manifestations of AI.

The point I’m making is not “recognize how good you’ve got it.” It’s that the gloom people feel today is *not* some inherent reaction to poor living standards or looming societal risks. Other societies have faced far, far worse. The pessimism is a social construct, an idea being spread somehow.
